THE IMPORTANCE OF ROI & ROAS IN MARKETING

 

In marketing, ROI represents a useful indicator of the effectiveness of the marketing activities carried out by the company and, at the same time, constitutes a key reference for guiding future investment decisions. It can be used to evaluate the performance of a specific marketing program or the overall marketing mix of the company.

The return on marketing investments index or marketing ROI  expressed as a percentage ratio between the marketing contribution and total marketing expenses, indicates the expected return on marketing investments. The advantages associated with the use of this index are:

  • 1-justify marketing expenses: marketing investments represent an expense and top management want to know what the expected return of these investments is and their impact on company profitability;
  •  
  • 2-determine the priorities in marketing investments and the correct allocation of the marketing budget : ROI is often calculated at the program or campaign level, in order to evaluate future investments taking into account which efforts have a higher return and therefore justify further investments;
  •  
  • 3-compare the efficiency of marketing activities with the work of competitors: by comparing the ROI of a company and that of its competitors, it is possible to evaluate the performance of the company's work in the relevant market;
  •  
  • 4-evaluate and monitor the work of the marketing team: it allows you to evaluate ex post what the performance of the strategies adopted and the investments made has been, making it possible to judge the marketing work.


Remaining in the field of marketing, it is possible to analyze the return generated by advertising costs. In this case we talk about return on advertising spendings, a profitability index that allows us to calculate the profit generated by each euro spent on advertising. While the ROI allows you to understand the cost-effectiveness of the strategies implemented and the investments made, the ROAS allows evaluating the profit generated by advertising expenses. They are two complementary indicators that must be considered for the formulation of effective campaigns.
